Around the World with You: Sian Williams

When we asked travel-savvy Sian Williams, the Founder of Baby Friendly Boltholes, where her favourite place in the world was, we had a feeling we would discover a really special spot. Here it is...

My favourite place changes about once month since I hear about so many amazing places running a site like Baby Friendly Boltholes, however, an enduring favourite is Oia in Santorini. Its filled with romantic little hotels with rooms and balconies cut into the cliff-side all with spectacular views over the lake-like Caldera. The cobbled streets of the village above are crammed with pretty jewellery shops, art galleries and fabulous restaurants.

My top tip is… Don't follow the crowds to the castle to watch the spectacular sunset but head down to the fresh fish tavernas clustered around the tiny port at Ammoudi (just below the village but rarely found by the crowds)  and watch it there with a delicious meal and wine… heavenly!

What a mesmerising place to behold blue skies and sublime sunsets. Thank you Sian for sharing this Greek Island spot, and the tip too.  I'm dreaming of a romantic anniversary trip in years to come.

Has this got you thinking about your favourite place?

Perhaps it's granny's garden, your local park, a far-flung island, a museum, or cafe. Perhaps it's a building in your city, a shop window, a shady spot under a tree.

Whatever, wherever your favourite place is we want to share it.

Here's how to get involved:

•    Send us a picture of your favourite place  - or we can source one for you as we have above.
•    Tell us where it is. If you'd like to tell us why even better.
•    Email it to : info@sistersguild.com

We will share each one, each week, here on our blog and we will create an interactive global map of all the places we receive, building a community of people and places and making our global neighbourhood that little bit closer.

So, put your place upon the map and shout a big 'Hello'
Imagine all the people all the places we could know

Monday Makery - Tissue Paper Flowers

On Sunday 1st July Sessi woke up and was six, just like that. We had been doing a countdown following our birthday traditions, making numbered paper chains, sticking home made lined envelopes on the bedroom door filled with special messages, wishes and notes, we had celebrated Sessi's last day of being 5 and with so much anticipation of the big day the day itself was finally here. As part of the birthday celebrations I had been secretly making giant tissue paper flowers to hang all over the house. Hiding them wherever I could so as not to be seen until her birthday morning.
Birthdays are a big occasion here, and so there is always plenty of decorations and surprises. We hung the birthday bunting across the sitting room and the kitchen was full of cheeky characters from a selection of Japanese paper balloonsThere wasn't a place in the house that wasn't full of colour and joy.
So, on Sunday Sessi woke up to discover giant flowers filling her bedroom, the sitting room and hung all the way down the hallway.
I love all their bright colours and the transformation of the home was beautiful.  Two weeks later they are still hanging, only now as requested they are mostly in her bedroom.
As with all our Monday Makeries they are simple to make and they're great for any occasion, be it rich colours at Christmas, co-ordinated party colours, birthdays, Easter or even just to cheer up a room.

Here's what you'll need:
  • tissue paper
  • scissors
  • string

Here's how:
  1. Take your chosen coloured tissue paper and stack a pile of them together one sheet on top of the other. I used 10 sheets for the large flowers and 6 for the smaller ones.
  2. Fold over the shorter edge about an inch and press firmly along the fold.
  3. Turn over the pile of paper and fold back again another inch. Keep going creating a consertina of folds until you reach the end.
  4. Take a piece of string and tie the folded strip together in the centre to create the centre of the flower.
  5. Cut a curved petal shape at the each end of the paper.
  6. Open up one end creating a fan and then pull up each sheet of paper creating the layers of the flowers.
  7. Do the same for the other end until each fold of paper is opened like petals.
You can vary the size and shapes of each flower by using different lengths of tissue paper, by folding along the shorter or the longer edge, by cutting curved or pointed ends, and by how many layers of tissue paper you use. I made some into fully rounded flower balls and others with a flat back.

You can choose colours to match a theme or all of your favourite colours together. You can layer different colours in the flowers by staking alternate colours together, or create a different coloured centre with a few sheets of stronger colours at the beginning. To hang them from the ceiling I used cotton thread tied around the centre with various lengths then used sticky tape to fix the thread to the ceiling. They look epecially beautiful hanging above the girls beds and they both love going to sleep with a hanging garden above them.

Have fun and Happy Making!

Once Upon A Week - Now I Am Six

How I wish time could slow down or just pause a while. Sometimes we are so very busy looking at whats ahead of us, trying to reach the horizon each day that we don't see all that is around us.
Sessi has just turned six and though for her its as though she's crossed a border into the world of Grown-up-child, (yes it is a place that actually exists) suddenly leaving her little sister behind her it has made me feel as though I need to hold on to time, to slow it down while I catch up.
She has been so busy growing up, learning so very much and I have been busy with, well, life I guess that I haven't noticed so very much all the individual small but so significant changes. More and more the roots of who she is are growing deeper and she is becoming her own person stronger and surer.
She holds ahead of her the opportunities to discover what she wants to become and yet has no reason to think of her future ahead, but only to spend her days in the here, in the right now, in each passing wonderful moment of childhood.
How is it that though she's been growing up for quite some time now I feel as though I am seeing it for the first time. There are certain milestones that make it feel as though our children have suddenly jumped forward into another time in their lives, leaving us wondering where all the time has gone. Turning six certainly feels like a leap into a whole new world of looking back - for me at least.

Measuring Sessi on our family height chart on her birthday morning I realised she is not growing away from what she was but more growing into who she will become now I know that even when her height ceases to grow her growth will never stop, just as I am still growing at 34. I only hope I can hold her the way I do now, that we will always be the way we are now, that we will still go to the swings in the rain and above all I hope that one day she too will feel this feeling when she is a mother and her own daughter turns six.

Our memories lie behind us like a string of lights that follow where we go. I can see them all twinkling when I see her and they shine as bright as the stars in the sky. I am now aware that she will outgrow me so much faster than I will ever outgrow her. But just as we were once joined by the umbilical cord so will we always  be joined by the string of lights.

The Art of Living - A Guide to London Parks - Part 1 of 2

If you're a city parent here in London or are about to become a city parent in the big smoke there are a few things for sure that you will get to know pretty quickly. Firstly, just how many attractions are free in London; from amazing museums such as the Natural History Museum to free events scattered across the city. Though London is bustling with fantastic theatre, cafes, restaurants and shops, as a parent you will come to be familiar with places where you are free to run wild with your children, places where you can kick off your shoes, roll out a picnic rug, fly a kite, dip your toes into cool water and just breath.

Jenni Sparks @evermade.com

Summer in the City offers so much and here with a guide to London parks and open spaces you can get some outdoor living and feel as though you've had a mini holiday and then hop on the no9 bus, sitting at the top for some great views on the way home.

With so many open spaces to write about we've had to divide this into 2 parts. Here is part one of our guide to London Life in The Parks.

I'm a little bias when it comes to Battersea Park as this is the park where I have spent most of my parenting days. My love of the park first began when I picniced there with my boyfriend, steeling kisses in the summer sunshine and dreaming of our future together. He later became my husband and now we spend endless days playing with our children in the park where we fell in love. Our children took their first steps here, learned to climb trees and had birthday party picnics with puppeteers. It has become our garden, that open space where we ride bikes, scoot, roller skate and run free.

Triphunter has the park listed as no3 in its 'top ten places in the world to take a nap', but don't let that fool you. Yes it's a quiet park with perfect shady places for picnics  but there's also an adventure playground a zoo and fountains where children run up against the edge to get drenched in the heat of the day.
Its the park where Cbeebies filmed their summer song too:

Battersea park has a lot to offer and is the only park that runs alongside the Thames. At sunrise a gong is sounded at the peace pagoda, which no doubt wakes a few of the animals in the nearby Children's zoo. There is a beautiful quiet and almost secret spot tucked away hidden behind the trees known as the Old English Garden, its well worth discovering it for yourself and taking in the scents of the beautiful flowers and plants or to lie back on a bench and recover from an intrepid journey across the boating lake.
There are two cafes - though I cannot boast that either does particularly great food but good enough for a bite if you've not brought some with you. It is always worth checking whats on at the Pumphouse Art Gallery and of course the children will be happy to discover not one but two playgrounds, with the adventure playground having a bouncy castle as well as rope slides and those-nerve-wracking-for-parents-thrilling-for-kids frames, slides and pulleys!

The park is steeped in history and has some of London's most famous landmarks such as Albert Bridge, Battersea Power Station and Battersea Dogs Home. Countless films and tv series are constantly filmed here in this little piece of green heaven that covers 200 acres.

So whether you want to picnic, visit the zoo, hire a bike, take a boat ride across the lake, visit the gallery, discover a new playground, discover statues by Henry Moore, Eric Kennington or the brown dog statue by Nicola Hicks, if you want to try to get the island in the lake, spot herons, climb craggy rocks or just quite simply soak up the summer sun. I highly recommend this gem.

Where: On the south bank of the river Thames opposite Chelsea.

Green park is the smallest of the Royal Parks but is a welcome haven in central London. Covering 47 acres of central London space it is bordered by Piccadilly, Constitution Hill and Queens walk as well as it's neighbouring St James's Park and of course most famously Buckingham Palace.
Formerly known as Upper St James's, by the mid 18th century the name was changed to that of Green park. True or not it is believed that the parks name may have come to be from a tale in which King Charles II picked flowers to give to another woman, his wife then ordered every flower to be pulled up and no more flowers were to be planted. Though the park has no flower beds it does have some of Britain's rarest native timber trees: the black poplar.
Children will be delighted to know that this is a place that has not only seen duels and fireworks but also the place where Pongo and Purdy first meet in the 1996 film 101 dalmatians. They might be pretty intrigued to know that the Tyburn (a stream) runs underneath it too!

So, if the Queen forgets you were coming round for afternoon tea then the royal soil of Green Park is a great alternative spot to sit and eat your sandwiches instead. Surprisingly quiet for its central location its a place to remember to stop and pause, hire a deck chair and watch the working world go by. So if you're nearby, perhaps having seen the change of the guard or having visited The Flemming Collection pause for a while in Green Park and enjoy the peace and quiet in the centre of the city.

Where: South end of The Mall bordering Constitution Hill and Piccadilly. Green Park sits between Hyde park and St James Park.

With breathtaking views and rambling hills this feels like a wild place tamed for our enjoyment. From the top of the hill it is quite easy to feel as though you were standing on the edge of the world. Looking across and into the city with its increasingly changing landscape it is a welcome view; leaving the busy bustling city behind for some wide open space.
Greenwich park has lots to offer, you can climb the hill to reach the Observatory or just to roll back down again! On the lower level of the park there is children's playground and on a warm day children will love to walk through the little man-made stream. Visit the national maritime museum, the weekend market and Cutty Sark. If its a windy day you're sure to see lots of kites flying with such wide open spaces it really is the best place to send kites soaring up to the clouds.
Greenwich is the place where time begins but its also a place where time slows down for a leisurely picnic in the warm summer air. You can picnic in the kings 'back garden' with one foot in each hemisphere, now what sounds more lovely than that on a summers day.

It is easy to see why Greenwich Park has become part of the World Heritage Site. Its a great place to spend a day, learn about what lies above us in the sky at the obervatory, spend some pocket money at the market and lie back and watch the clouds roll by.

I would recommend travelling there by boat to make it an even more memorable day. There are lots of places along the Thames where you can hop on board and sail your way down. You can take a riverboat to Greenwich Pier from Westminster, Embankment or Tower Piers.

Where: Sitting on the south east side of the Thames opposite the isle of dogs.

The weekend is almost here, lets get ready for some picnics in the parks

Next week we'll bring continue to bring you the best of London parks as well as some of London's secret gardens.

Around the World with You: Kate Maryon

It's amazing how our blog journey Around the World has a way of bringing us to a place close to home - to a place made all the more beautiful by someone's personal story.  The inspiring Children's Author Kate Maryon tells us of this place that has a deep emotional resonance for her.

My favourite place in the world is Heaven's Gate on the Longleat Estate in Wiltshire. I discovered it in 1996 when, three days after my mum died, I packed my car and left my life in London behind. I took my two children (then aged 8+6) a bag of clothes, three bicycles and a copy of Pippi Longstocking, and rented a house in Horningsham where I spent the next 9 months grieving. After a month my sister and her three kids joined us and we all lived together for a while. Most mornings, after dropping our kids at school, my sister and I would walk through the incredible woods surrounding us and sit on one of the benches at Heaven's Gate to cry. We cried out our traumatic childhoods, our broken marriages, our lost dreams and the death of our lovely mum. The view at Heaven's Gate is so amazing, almost magical, borderline biblical in it's sweeping beauty that, like a balm, it somehow soothed our inner turmoils. It offered us space to breathe, to feel ourselves as more than the painful drama of our lives. And from that special place we learned, baby step by baby step, to live again.
Now it's a place I go if I'm feeling happy or sad. It offers the most amazing sunsets. It reminds of how wonderful it is to be alive.

Thank you Kate for sharing your place and your incredible story xx

*************

From such an experience must be born more stories - stories that need to be told -  and it is very exciting to discover Kate's books.

Kate Maryon writes books that take the reader on a journey, 'on a kind of exploration, so they end up wondering... What would my life be like if this thing happened to me?

Kate's books with titles such as 'A Sea of Stars' and 'A Million Angels' are real life stories with topical issues. They are aimed at girls aged 8-12 - that time of significant experience and questioning, when life can throw difficult things at you, as the path to adulthood can be fraught.  Yet there is still magic to hold on to.
Kate expresses it so beautifully:
I want kids to know that they are a gift waiting to be unwrapped by life, that they have talents and possibilities beyond their wildest dreams. I get them to promise that however difficult life gets they'll never give up on their dreams and that the only thing in life worth anything is Love. I hope to inspire them to follow their truth and live their bliss.

Here is where you will find Kate, for those of you who wish to connect, share a story, find her books and spread some love - as that's what it's all about!

Where's your favourite place?

Perhaps it's granny's garden, your local park, a far-flung island, a museum, or cafe. Perhaps it's a building in your city, a shop window, a shady spot under a tree.

Monday Makery: A Lavender Crown for Sunny Memories

We have recently enjoyed a week in Provence with a group of friends.  We were surrounded by gardens and fields of Lavender under blue sunny skies which made for a stunning combination of scent and colour.  It was truly sublime.  We were mostly idle, but a friend picked some lavender and before our eyes turned it into a beautiful crown.  I watched and learned how simple it is to make, and so pleasing. Read on to find out how....

1.  Gather about 30-50 stems of Lavender - the quantity depends on how wide and dense you would like the crown to be.  If the Lavender bush is within reach then you can pick as you go, and get the children involved too.
2.  Take 3 stems and plait them together to approximately an inch (as per pic 1 below).  This forms the base band onto which you will weave further stems.
3.  Take another stem and lie across the band at the base of the lavender flowers (pic 2).  Loop the stem under and bring it over the top then tightly turn the stem at a right angle to join the other stem lengths (pic 3 & 4).

4.  Repeat with each stem of lavender, gently pushing each flower and stem loop close to the previous one. Curve and manipulate the band into shape as you continue to add.

Tip: it is best to complete the crown the same day as it will dry out overnight and you will lose the flexibility of the stems.

5.  To join the 2 ends together you will firstly need to trim the ends, then bring the 2 ends together with an overlap and take a few more stems of lavender to bind it together tightly.  And there you have a lavender crown fit for a prince or princess!

When we got back home we made another crown with 2 different types of lavender from our garden...just to prove that English lavender works just as well.  I'm sure other flowers will look lovely too - so do experiment.  Here's hoping for more crafts in the sun!

Send us any pics of your creations or other ideas for flower crafts info@sistersguild.com

Pelican, Brian Wildsmith at Illustration Cupboard

I'm thrilled to have recently received a card from Illustration Cupboard (a place I shared with you here) for the Brian Wildsmith exhibition.  He is one of the most memorable and most favourite artists from my childhood (peek at Granny's Bookcase). It's been a pleasure to share with my boys some of my well-loved Brian Wildsmith illustrated tales.  And now...his work is on show.

The Blue Bird, Front Cover - Brian Wildsmith at Illustration Cupboard

Illustration Cupboard will showcase some original paintings and black ink graphic artwork too, some of which are so wild and detailed.  It sees the first showing of Brian Wildsmith's costume designs for The Blue Bird.  So exciting...A special trip to London is in order.

Around the World with You: Poppy Norton

This week we continue on our little blog trip ‘Around the World,’ this time with Poppy Norton showing us the way.  Poppy is in our circle of 'Twitter sisters' and we have got to know her since we started out on the Sisters Guild adventure.   Poppy is the super-seeker of all that is stylish on Baby Style File.  Her experience comes from her career as a stylist, a very desirable one we must add.  You must take a look here poppynorton.com for some great inspiration.

And where else can this talented mama, blogger and stylist be found?  Online, she is here @babystylefile and here @poppynorton.  But, we were keen to find out just where her favourite place may be.  As she’s a London ‘gal’ we had our suspicions it would be somewhere in the capital…..and yes, we were right!  It sounds like quite a special place and we are very pleased to add it to the map, and our wanderlust-list!
So, where exactly is it?  Read on...

My favourite place? Well there are quite a few to choose from, New York is quite high up on the list (I love the contrasting architecture and cultures and the fact it's a city where you spend your time looking up). India is also a super special spot (I can't even begin to put down in words how beautiful it is in both colour and fragrance.) But I'm also a big old fan of the city in which I live, London. So much culture, plus I find extreme comfort in knowing that I can get photocopying done at 3am should the urge take me (yes, I know this is a strange way to measure happiness, but there you go.)

One of my most favourite spots in London is a beautiful restaurant called The Wolseley thewolseley.com. Originally a car showroom in the 1920's the interior has been beautifully restored to a state of wow when you walk in (these photos don't really do it justice if I'm honest). But despite being amazingly grand it has a sense of ease about it and you're not made to feel uncomfortable should you rock up in a pair of jeans. It also holds a lot of personal memories for me, it's one of my very happy places. Oh and the cakes are pretty good too!

Thank you Poppy for introducing to us to 'your place' of fine dining in such a sublime setting.  I am now dreaming of a decadent Afternoon Tea  (without the rascals). It's definitely a place to lust and linger!

Where's your favourite place?

Perhaps it's granny's garden, your local park, a far-flung island, a museum, or cafe. Perhaps it's a building in your city, a shop window, a shady spot under a tree.

Holly Golightly, played by Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's says:

"Well, when I get it the only thing that does any good is to jump in  a cab and go to Tiffany's. Calms me down right away. The quietness and the proud look of it; nothing very bad could happen to you there. If I could find a real-life place that'd make me feel like Tiffany's, then - then I'd buy some furniture and give the cat a name."
